HISTORY of Bucksport & Henrietta Bluffs:
In 1825, when Captain Henry Buck founded Bucksport on the Banks of The Waccamaw River, he envisioned a thriving community based on lumber shipping. His dream finally came true when his first lumber mill soon became two, then three in Bucksville competing with the popular lumbermills in the north. As these steam powered saw mills prospered, the town of Bucksville grew. Ships from New England, New York and West Indies left Bucksville loaded with lumber. In fact in 1840, 52 ships sailed out of Bucksville.

After the Civil war, Bucksville lumber did not suffer the hardships of the weakening economic times, but remained prosperous. Ports around the world were the recipients of the four million feet of cypress shingles and the six million feet of lumber milled and shipped out of Bucksville each year.

Soon the lumbermills turned into shipbuilding and a big competition arouse. You see, there was also a town named Bucksville in Maine and they were known for their ship building! So the two Bucksvilles set out to see who could build a finer vessel with the shortest time and less money. The breathtaking Henrietta Vessel was born and launched from Bucksville, South Carolina. She won the competition by a great margin!

The Bucksville and Bucksport lumbermills continued to prosper into the early twentieth century. Then the combined effects of a great fire and the Depression ended the towns altogether. Today the picturesque harbor at Bucksport is a stopover for many sailing vessels and yachts on the Intracoastal Waterway to enjoy the marina and restaurant.

(You can live and/or own right on the history banks of Bucksport!!!)
